The Anthropocene has been a driving force behind my art from day one at university it describes the fact that man is now the main influencer of change on the planet. The fence as an analogy for the effects of land enclosure and the demands by Capitalism for infinite resources. Land is not an infinite resource, once the land available becomes poorer in quality those looking for resources need to look to other continents, hence colonialisation takes place. When new lands are found with no fences those looking for resources claim that the land is unowned and free to be claimed. It is the lack of fence that gives them the right to claim the land. Think
about the damage that fences cause. With their erection comes population displacement, removal of resource to Indigenous population, loss of knowledge, introduction of non-native crops, monoculture. Use of monoculture in turn leads to loss of wildlife due to the need to control pests and plant diseases. The continuation of this practice is one of the causes of climate change.
ALL BECAUSE OF A FENCE!
The artwork is made up of images of fence wood screen printed onto both sides of Kozo (Japanese paper) then suspended so it can be viewed from both sides.
This is my BA (Hons) Fine Art exhibition I hope you enjoy it
